Class Reflection & Summary - Annie Ho
During quarantine, my main struggle was to concentrate on my student life as I was surrounded by my family and news that seemed to get more devastating. Though I did not have very much experience with film analysis or creating film, I thought my transition to online classes moved relatively smoothly, especially since this discipline already targeted and made use of the emerging media. My biggest obstacle during my time in this class was to create an enjoyable final project using a program I was still struggling with, even though students were given a lot of freedom. However, I enjoyed being able to accomplish something new and I was exposed to a new perspective about the hardships of creating a film. After finishing this course, I find myself analyzing the same shows and videos I watch, and more humbly appreciating the labor that goes into creating the perfect film. Additionally, I also think about how crucial digital media has become during times like this, and how I should be appreciative that I am still able to continue on with my classes online. I’m grateful that my professors and other students were able to put a great amount of effort into maintaining a learning environment during a difficult time, normalizing an awkward and unfamiliar setup, and ending classes positively.

My name is Annie. Nearing the end of my second semester at Hunter, I have only recently decided to declare my major in the media studies path. The majority of the time, I’m still unsure about what my future career holds for me, or if I’m on the right track. Project 1: Define a Space (description)

New York is known for its hustle and constant motion, filled with a diverse combination of people who are just trying to combat the speed of the city. As people who are so familiar with the motion-filled landscape, we are often desensitized to the details around us. In our project, my partner and I will be zooming into a different aspect of New York in detail, hoping to capture moments of peace within the bustling and busy city. To evoke this form of tranquility, Bianca and I chose to focus on aspects of nature in the concrete jungle. The characteristics of the city’s nature differ from what the larger idea of “nature” is, and we wish to link together examples of New York’s natural scene to exhibit a form of peaceful escape.
