Define A Place: Shot List

In our short film, we hope to convey the emotion of calamity and peacefulness within fast-paced life, using the context of New York City’s hectic environment. To express this feeling, we want to take advantage of Central Park’s setting near more urban life, such as the subways, buses, and buildings. We want to begin with still shots of busy life, something New York natives are familiar with and desensitized to. Then, transitioning to the park setting with similar still shots by the camera will stand out to the viewer as a contrasting tranquility and stillness, especially with elements such as plants and bodies of water. Our use of the natural landscape will allow the viewer to experience a sense of serenity after establishing our setting in one of the busiest and most motion-filled cities. Example shots of people and different forms of life will remind the viewer of this sense of “getting away” from the stress of the city. We also hope to keep in mind the flow of music in this film, which will accompany the transition of quickness to stillness. 

List of Possible Camera Shots:
  1. A wide shot of 5th avenue to show all of the cars and people walking
  2. A medium shot of the street, specifically of people walking
  3. A medium shot of all street, specifically of the cars passing by
  4. An establishing shot of the entrance to central park
  5. A moving shot of the trail in the park, specifically one with a lot of trees and nature
  6. A close up, still shot of someone/people walking by, more focused on the shoes and feet, with the camera at a very low level
  7. A close up of plants, the ground, grass, anything we can find in that area that implements the theme of nature & tranquility
  8. A wide shot of people sitting on benches, relaxing
  9. A wide shot from the bridge, meaning a shot from above, overlooking the pathway in the park or a shot from one of the rocks 
  10. A wide shot of (if we can find) a dog playing, children playing, etc.
  11. A medium shot of the sun breaking through the trees
  12. A wide, slow moving shot of the clouds or the sky (pointing at a more upward angle, moving in a circular motion).
  13. A wide shot of an individual (group members) sitting near a tree (or any nature) that mimics a silhouette by manipulating composition and depth of field.
  14. Finally, a wide shot of a part of the park without much people, specifically a wide shot of a grass field or from above on the bridge at the 5th ave entrance with not too much motion

Project 1: Define a Space (description)

New York is known for its hustle and constant motion, filled with a diverse combination of people who are just trying to combat the speed of the city. As people who are so familiar with the motion-filled landscape, we are often desensitized to the details around us. In our project, my partner and I will be zooming into a different aspect of New York in detail, hoping to capture moments of peace within the bustling and busy city. To evoke this form of tranquility, Bianca and I chose to focus on aspects of nature in the concrete jungle.
